SUTHERLANDS HOME FURNISHING COMPANY PROFILE
Craig Steel originally started a furniture restoring business called Sutherlands Restorers, before opening up Sutherlands Furniture in 1998. The first store was in Chapel Street, Pietermaritzburg. The company based its foundations on good quality, classical furniture.
In 2002, Sutherlands purchased a site overlooking the N3 highway just off the Howick/Midmar turn-off. This site was successfully rezoned as a special industrial zone and the Howick branch of Sutherlands was opened, which serviced the Midlands/Howick and numerous Johannesburg visitors off the N3.
In 2005, Craig Steel purchased a lounge manufacturing company called Robfair Investments CC t/a Comfy Lounge. This company manufactured lounge suites and chairs (including deep-buttoned leather chairs and couches used extensively in companies and home studies). Initially Comfy Lounge supplied not just Sutherlands but also companies such as Mr Price.
In 2006, the Sutherlands Durban showroom in Riverhorse Valley was opened.
Due to the rapid growth of the businesses, it was decided that a sole proprietor was not the correct legal entity to continue to trade and in December 2007, the businesses were incorporated as follows:
Nungu Trading (Pty) Ltd t/a Sutherlands - this is the furniture retail entity.
Collateral Trading CC t/a National Furniture Products - this is the furniture manufacturing entity.
Robfair Investments CC t/a Comfy Lounge - this is the lounge manufacturing entity.
Willmeg Investments (Pty) Ltd - this is the property development company, which currently owns numerous properties including Sutherlands Howick showroom and Sutherlands Durban showroom.
Due to numerous requests from customers, Sutherlands opened a Johannesburg showroom in early February 2010. The forecasted cashflow will more than double Sutherlands existing turnover and net earnings.
Sutherlands is a BEE level 8 rated company.
